Seven times a week crammed into five days there are 18 greyhound dog races just west of Memphis, Tennessee. Two matinees, one twilight session, and four 7:00 PM race cards all consist of live racing. In addition, the facility hosts simulcast viewing and wagering of both horse and dog races from throughout the world. It also highlights casinos games from slot machines to poker and blackjack. Southland Park Gaming and Racing is located just north of the east/west expressway at 1550 N.

Ingram Blvd. I40 and I55 come together and split apart combining and separating traffic for the trek to, from, and through Memphis. The facility (see the attached picture) is a big, blocky looking facility that is reminiscent of a race track. There are major entrances on the southwest and the southeast corners of the building. Entering from either side of the facility opens into a large casino. There are a few versions of video poker embedded in an array of the over 900 of the currently popular penny road trip slot machine machines.

In the center of the casino are 10 blackjack tables where dealers actively deal the game. Just east of the blackjack tables is a 10 seat automated roulette game and a 10 seat automated craps game. Northeast of this area is a bank of multi player video blackjack machines, a multi player automated hold 'em poker machine, and a multi player automated Let It Ride game. Further east in the building is the World Market Buffet that specializes each day in a different menu ranging from Shrimp on Friday to Prime Rib on Thursday, and Tex-Mex on Monday.

A delicious specialty drink called the VIP is made of iced tea and lemonade. Alcoholic beverages are available at reasonable cost. Just south of the buffet cashier is Quinn amp; Ella's Café which features fast food snacks such as burgers, hot dogs, and baskets of food. The north exit from the building to the trackside viewing of live racing is just next to the buffet. The south entrance/exit on the building's east end enters to the buffet. There is an escalator up and down to a large area for the racing enthusiast and the poker player.

A gourmet dining room - The Bourbon Street Steakhouse and Grill - offers race viewing and wagering. There is also a snack bar located in the major race viewing area. On the second floor in the midst of this, there is a nine table automated poker room. There is always an attendant on duty that will provide a demonstration of how the automated tables work. The poker area is surrounded by a wooden half wall that provides some privacy.

Inside this wooden wall and surrounding the poker tables on two sides are 18 video poker machines. On both the first floor (in the northwest corner of the building) and on the second floor (centrally located near the poker room) are counters where attendants will provide free memberships in the Player Rewards Club. Points are earned as games are played or bets are made that can later be redeemed for meals or merchandise. The second floor is large and spacious and relatively quiet.

The first floor is crowded and bustling with musical sounds coming from the machines and the fake jangling noises of coins falling filling the air. A person looking for either environment can find it at Southland Park Gaming and Racing.
